Some thoughts about (j)OpenSim Events

13 years 1 month ago #440 by foto50
The last issue I start now before going to make \"search\" working is the \"events\" part.

Imho, events is a central issue that make new communities growing and keep grown communities alive and interesting. Wether it is a game competition, a music performance, an art gallery, ... events of any kind are the reasons that make us all join inworld and make the life in there interesting.

So this is why I take a closer look at this and am very much interested about your comments :) :)

Of course I have something in mind already. Event management in jOpenSim should meet the following:
 • Not everybody should be able to host anywhere an event. It should be limited to land owned by the event hoster or some group member with land power in it\'s role if it is group owned land
 • some regions should be able to be defined as \"public\" regions where anybody could host an event. This specially helps for starting communities where there are not many land owners and/or groups owning land
 • of course it must be searchable inworld and maybe also via Joomla\'s search (plugin?)
 • while it should be fairly easy for anyone to host an event, there must be some sort of control from administration side for those \"black sheeps\" (we all know those event spammers of SL, dont we?).
 • From technical side, I will need to limit event hosting land to those that have a \"landing point\" set, unless anybody knows how to build surls from those that havent...
 • ... What else is there to be considered? ...
Looking forward for your input ;) ;)

That is a very nice starting list.. :) :)

I think that the ability to limit as you mention is superb. And yes, we do remember the trauma of SL events, and those there to ruin them. :) :) Spammers is a good word, although I think they called those providing the crashing flying erotica prim particles \"griefers\". No matter how you view it, any sort of event permission limiting sounds like a good deal to me. As this proceeds, I think there will be quite a few new ideas and suggestions in this area of the work.

I also agree that events is the \"glue\" that holds the community together. And that events both front-end, the search, etc.. for events will be a paramount part of the component. Very much looking forward to this phase.

For the front-end Joomla, and as we discussed briefly, I think a module for latest events would be great. Not so much a calendar type of module, but maybe a text scroll type module (news ticker type?), or something along those lines that would grab the latest advertised events. This might have some sort of a simple configuration as to how many to scroll, what dates or times, or maybe \"all\" and most recent advertised. This module wouldn\'t have to be fancy to be effective I don\'t believe.
